Once again, Gebrüder Weiss served as the team's official logistics partner.

"Placing 11th shows how well the team handled the challenges of this year's race – a great achievement," said Tracy van Arend, branch manager for Gebrüder Weiss Adelaide. She welcomed the ETH team at the finish line together with Sharon Young, customer service and process manager at Gebrüder Weiss Australia. "It was exciting to follow the race and cheer for the team. While we, as the logistics partner, don't directly influence the competition itself, we make sure that the vehicle arrives in Australia on time, giving the students sufficient opportunity to train and prepare. We were able to deliver that again this year," adds Sharon Young.

Following the race, Gebrüder Weiss is handling the return transport of the solar car and its equipment back to Europe. The students had to adapt to cooler temperatures and different light conditions. This required an adjusted race strategy, particularly with respect to energy management and daily planning. On day three of the race, the team also faced a technical issue: the cruise control failed, and a gust of wind tore off part of the left wheel cover. Both problems were quickly repaired, and the vehicle was back on the road shortly afterward.

"This year's circumstances pushed us but also showed how resilient our team and vehicle are," says Clara Nörenberg, team manager at aCentauri. In reality, today’s 3PLs offer far more.

Behind every product shipped to a customer is a series of labor-intensive steps: unloading cartons, relabeling products, repackaging items, or assembling kits. Many businesses still perform these functions in-house, which ties up labor and resources. While this may work at smaller volumes, it quickly becomes a roadblock when demand increases.

Specialized fulfillment services allow businesses to shift these processes to a 3PL, creating scalable, repeatable systems supported by technology and experienced staff. The outcome is lower overhead, greater efficiency, and the ability to expand without adding fixed costs.

Pick and Pack: Accuracy at Scale

Pick and pack is one of the most common fulfillment tasks, but it becomes complex as order volumes grow. Whether fulfilling individual e-commerce orders or wholesale case-picks, accuracy is essential.

How a 3PL Helps

A 3PL uses advanced warehouse management systems (WMS) that guide pickers with optimized routes, barcode scanning, and automated order verification. This reduces errors and speeds up the order cycle.

Business benefits include:

Fewer returns and reships, reducing costs and customer dissatisfaction

Faster throughput, enabling same-day or next-day shipping

Scalable labor that flexes during peak seasons without additional hiring

When order accuracy is tied directly to customer loyalty, pick and pack becomes more than a back-office function. It is a driver of long-term growth.

Full Pallet In/Out: Streamlined Flow for High-Volume Goods

For manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, pallets remain the foundation of distribution. A 3PL optimized for pallet flow ensures high-volume shipments move in and out seamlessly.

How a 3PL Helps

With racking systems, cross-docking, and high-throughput equipment, pallets can be received, stored, or shipped with minimal handling.

The advantages are clear:

Speed, as pallets move from inbound to outbound quickly

Cost efficiency, with fewer handling steps that reduce labor spend

Optimized space utilization in the warehouse

This type of efficiency supports companies serving large retail distribution centers or managing high-volume wholesale shipments.

Curious how an experienced 3PL could help you with fulfillment services? Explore customized fulfillment solutions from Gebrüder Weiss built around your goals.

Retail Compliance Labeling: Avoid Penalties and Delays

Supplying large retailers requires strict compliance with labeling and packaging standards. Mistakes result in fines, chargebacks, or delayed product acceptance.

How a 3PL Helps

A 3PL ensures every shipment is compliant before it leaves the warehouse. This includes GS1-128 barcodes, RFID tags, and pre-applied pallet or carton labels.

The value to businesses includes:

Faster processing at retail distribution centers

Avoidance of compliance-related chargebacks

Stronger, more reliable retailer relationships

Retail compliance labeling is one of the most overlooked yet critical 3PL services.

Carton Floor Unloading and Palletizing: Efficiency in Motion

Ocean containers and inbound shipments often arrive floor-loaded. Unloading and palletizing them is labor-intensive, time-sensitive work.

How a 3PL Helps

A 3PL manages carton unloading with trained labor, proper equipment, and safe handling processes. Once cartons are unloaded, pallets are built by SKU, order, or destination, ready for storage or outbound transport.

Results include:

Reduced physical strain and injury risk for employees

Faster processing of inbound containers

Better organization of products for efficient distribution

This service is especially valuable for companies importing large container volumes.

Kitting: Value-Added Assembly Without the Overhead

Kitting is the process of combining multiple SKUs into a single package for sale. This could be a subscription box, a promotional bundle, or a retail display.

How a 3PL Helps

3PLs create kitting work cells with trained staff, technology, and quality control to ensure accuracy. Whether assembling promotional sets or custom orders, they scale labor and space to meet demand.

Benefits of outsourcing kitting include:

On-demand scalability for seasonal promotions or launches

Just-in-time assembly that reduces inventory carrying costs

Customization that creates new marketing and sales opportunities

Kitting transforms fulfillment into a value-added service, not just a cost center.

Special Projects: Flexibility for the Unexpected

Every company encounters one-time or short-term needs such as packaging redesigns, product launches, or promotional campaigns. Internal operations often cannot absorb the extra workload without disruption.

How a 3PL Helps

With dedicated project space, flexible labor pools, and proven workflows, a 3PL can step in for projects that do not fit standard operations.

This flexibility enables businesses to undertake unique initiatives without overextending their own teams.

Why Partner With Gebrüder Weiss?

Specialized fulfillment is not only about outsourcing repetitive tasks. It is about building an ecosystem that helps companies grow with agility and confidence.

At Gebrüder Weiss, we provide more than logistics support. Logistics leader Gebrüder Weiss, a supporter of sustainable mobility since 2021, is backing the challenge.</pp:subtitle>

International transport and logistics organization Gebrüder Weiss announces its role as the official logistics partner of water sports enthusiast and environmental activist Michael Walther, as he attempts to set a World Record by crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). At the end of September, Walther, based in Keil, Germany will embark on this extraordinary mission. If he succeeds, he will become the first European to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo and unsupported on a SUP. While he’ll be alone on the water, he won’t be alone on land. Logistics provider Gebrüder Weiss will support the journey overland and across the sea.

The logistics specialists at Gebrüder Weiss’s Hamburg, Germany branch are managing the complex transportation needs for this custom-built SUP board. The board will first travel overland from Kiel to Lagos in Portugal, where Walther’s Atlantic crossing will begin. From there, he will paddle past the Canary and Cape Verde Islands before reaching his final destination in French Guiana. Once he lands in the port of Cayenne, Gebrüder Weiss will ship the board back to Kiel via sea freight using a certified climate-neutral process, made possible through verified insetting within the logistics chain.

“Michael Walther is drawing attention to marine conservation through an unconventional form of mobility and we are proud to support this mission as his logistics partner,” says Robert Stahlschmidt, Country Manager Air & Sea Germany at Gebrüder Weiss.

Collecting Scientific Data for the Alfred Wegener Institute

Walther expects the crossing to take approximately three months. He deliberately chose not to use a support vessel or receive any external assistance. During the journey, he’ll deploy a hydrophone to record the sounds of marine life. These audio recordings will be shared with the Alfred Wegener Institute, one of Germany’s leading marine research institutions, to support ongoing climate impact studies on ocean ecosystems.

This isn’t Walther’s first bold move for climate action. Since 2008, he has undertaken high-profile expeditions to raise awareness of climate and environmental issues. Past projects include paddling across Germany by river and traveling through Iceland to document glacial melt.

GWcycles: A Shared Commitment to Clean Oceans

Gebrüder Weiss is also actively engaged in another initiative to protect the world’s oceans. Through the global cycling campaign GWcycles – Cycling for the Seas, the company is inviting participants around the world to log their bike mileage in support of ocean health. For every 100,000 kilometers (62,137 miles) cycled, Gebrüder Weiss funds the removal of one metric ton (2,240 pounds) of ocean plastic. Since the campaign’s launch in April 2025, six tons (13,228 pounds) of marine debris have already been collected. The move reinforces the company’s ongoing efforts to facilitate cross-border trade between the United States and Mexico. Gebrüder Weiss first opened its El Paso location in 2022 in anticipation of the shift to nearshoring and named industry veteran Antonio Acuña as Director of Border Logistics. The new facility, located at 1273 Joe Battle Boulevard, enhances the company’s capabilities with the addition of warehouse space for greater cross-border efficiency.

Through the first five months of 2025, trade in goods between the United States and Mexico totaled $359.6 billion, with Mexico holding its position as the United States’ top trading partner. In May alone, bilateral trade reached $74.5 billion. Despite this momentum, newly announced tariffs from the Trump administration have reintroduced uncertainty. A 90-day pause issued in April does not apply to imports from Mexico that fall outside the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). As a result, manufacturers in sectors such as automotive, aerospace and high-tech are reassessing their supply chains. Gebrüder Weiss is supporting customers with strategies to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape and maintain cross-border efficiency.

"Knowledge is power, and Gebrüder Weiss has that knowledge," says Acuña. "Our El Paso employees are cross-border logistics experts and well-equipped to support customers navigating this shifting landscape through warehousing strategies, customs expertise, and alternative routes that help them move forward."

In addition to being a key hub for international trade, the El Paso region is the fifth-largest manufacturing center in the Western Hemisphere. To support this trade volume, the Gebrüder Weiss facility includes additional secure storage and advanced technology for efficient customs processing.

"We are confident that cross-border trade between the U.S. and Mexico will continue to grow over time, even if the growth is marked by near-term adaptations," says Mark McCullough, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss North America. "Our relocated El Paso facility and warehouse strengthen our position at the Southern Border for our customers’ benefit. We’ve successfully navigated supply chain challenges year after year, guiding our customers to best-fit outcomes.”

For more information about Gebrüder Weiss USA, its services, locations, or employment opportunities, please visit gw-world.com/us.

News

Discover how 3PL services reduce costs, improve inventory flow, and optimize operations today.</pp:subtitle>

If you’ve ever managed a warehouse or overseen inventory, you know one thing for sure: logistics is never static. Storage strategies shift as quickly as customer expectations, labor costs fluctuate, and shipping routes change. Even one missed scan, one poor pick path, or overstock can ripple across your entire supply chain and erode your margins.

That’s where contract logistics providers come in.

More than just warehouse space or a few forklifts, a proven 3PL partner offers scalable solutions, expert processes, and cutting-edge technology to streamline operations and reduce waste across your entire logistics network. Let’s explore exactly how contract logistics warehousing can help you boost efficiency and how you can take action today.

Why Traditional Warehousing Doesn’t Work Anymore

Conventional warehouse management usually looks like this:

Fill every inch of space

Staff up during busy seasons

Rely on manual counts and clipboards for inventory checks

That might have been fine decades ago, when order volumes were stable and customers accepted long lead times. But today, companies compete on flexibility, speed, and cost control, all of which require a higher level of visibility and process optimization than traditional warehouse setups can provide.

More than ever, businesses require warehouse operations that can scale quickly, provide real-time data, and help reduce overhead. That’s where experienced third-party logistics companies come in.

Why Outsource? Benefits and Advantages of a 3PL Approach

Companies outsource logistics to reduce costs, focus on core business activities, and gain access to specialized skills, technologies, and scalable resources. Contract logistics providers help streamline operations and improve supply chain responsiveness in ways that are difficult to achieve in-house.

Key advantages include:

Cost savings through shared resources and infrastructure

Access to advanced technology and automation tools

Improved agility and scalability to meet fluctuating demand

Enhanced workforce flexibility and productivity

The ability to quickly adapt to changing market conditions

For many businesses, outsourcing warehousing and logistics is not just about operational support; it is a strategic move to improve competitiveness and customer satisfaction.

Improve Efficiency with Real-Time Inventory Tracking and WMS Integration

Modern contract logistics providers deploy warehouse management systems equipped with real-time inventory tracking. That means every pallet, SKU, or container is visible around the clock and accessible to you online, often via user-friendly portals.

With accurate data at your fingertips, you can:

Forecast demand with greater accuracy

Avoid stockouts that delay customer orders

Reduce excess inventory that eats into working capital

Reorder at the perfect time and keep safety stock lean

And these improvements matter. Companies that leverage real-time WMS often report improvements in inventory accuracy up to 99 percent, which directly reduces holding and obsolescence costs. Imagine the savings this level of precision can generate, especially for businesses with high-value goods or seasonal products.

Curious how contract logistics could improve your operations? Explore customized solutions from Gebrüder Weiss built around your goals.

Scale Space and Labor as Business Needs Change

One of the most overlooked advantages of contract logistics warehousing is scalability.

When demand spikes, whether due to promotions, new product launches, or macroeconomic factors such as tariffs or supply chain disruptions, a 3PL can scale up warehouse capacity and labor almost overnight.

Pay only for the space you use, without long-term commitments

Avoid the costly overhead of idle facilities

Quickly add qualified warehouse teams during peak times

By tapping into a larger warehouse network, logistics companies give you built-in flexibility. This means your company can navigate fluctuations in demand without losing efficiency, delivering the capacity you need precisely when you need it and not a day longer.

Optimize Picking and Packing with Automation and Smarter Layouts

Labor is one of the biggest cost centers in warehouse operations, so making every second count is critical. Contract logistics providers specialize in warehouse design and automation that improves order fulfillment accuracy and speed.

Here are some practical tactics:

Smarter pick paths and warehouse layouts to reduce walking time and unnecessary touchpoints

Predictive staging and slotting to keep fast-moving SKUs near shipping docks

These strategies can help you hit service-level agreements consistently, reduce errors, and boost warehouse throughput, all of which drive down the overall cost per order.

Seamlessly Integrate WMS Systems into Your Supply Chain Technology

A top contract logistics partner doesn’t just optimize your warehouse; they integrate with your existing systems, whether that’s an ERP, order management tool, or e-commerce platform, so data stays in sync across the entire supply chain.

That kind of tech integration is especially important if:

You sell across multiple sales channels and need a single view of all orders

You face constant inventory updates due to returns or promotions

You require visibility into order status for customers and internal teams alike

With a good logistics partner, IT teams take the lead on setup, helping you implement new tools faster with fewer errors. That means you don’t need to go it alone or juggle different third-party solutions that don’t talk to each other.

Continuous Improvement Drives Long-Term Success

Finally, the most valuable thing a third-party logistics company can offer is a commitment to continuous improvement. Contract logistics providers constantly monitor KPIs, from order accuracy and dock-to-stock time to inventory turnover and on-time shipping, and fine-tune processes as your business evolves.

That means you don’t just solve today’s problems. You position your company for long-term, sustained performance as new challenges emerge, from rising customer expectations to supply chain disruptions to sustainability targets.

Logistics isn’t one and done. It’s a living process that benefits greatly from ongoing optimization and expertise.

Warehouse and Inventory Efficiency That Scales as You Grow

Boosting warehouse and inventory efficiency isn’t a one-off project. It’s an ongoing process that requires visibility, flexibility, scalability, and expertise.

By choosing the right contract logistics partner, you can transform your warehouse into a strategic asset:

Improve inventory accuracy and visibility

Scale warehouse capacity up or down as demand requires

Speed up order fulfillment without inflating your overhead

Integrate seamlessly with your existing tools and processes

And most importantly? Free up your team to focus on what matters most, serving your customers and scaling your business.

If this level of warehouse and inventory efficiency is what your company needs, a tailored 3PL partnership can help you make it happen.

Gebrüder Weiss Warehouse Locations and Available Space

Gebrüder Weiss operates strategically located warehouses across North America, including:

Elgin, IL (Midwest distribution hub)

Wood Dale, IL (Midwest distribution)

Laredo, TX (U.S.–Mexico cross-border operations)

Atlanta, GA (Southeast regional logistics)

El Paso, TX (U.S.–Mexico cross-border operations & Southwest fulfillment)

Los Angeles, CA (West Coast and port access)

Salt Lake City, UT (Intermountain West distribution)

Toronto, ON (Canada-U.S. trade gateway)

Space is available now at select Gebrüder Weiss facilities.

Whether you need flexible storage, enhanced fulfillment capabilities, or a warehouse partner that can scale with your growth, our logistics experts are ready to help.

Contact Gebrüder Weiss today to explore tailored solutions built around your business.

blog article

For shippers, it’s a recurring pain point, but partnering with a third-party logistics provider (3PL) can turn that pain into an operational advantage.

Let’s start with a truth most logistics leaders know but don’t always act on: You can’t scale with chaos. And in today’s volatile freight environment, chaos shows up as capacity crunches, over and over again.

If you rely on Full Truckload (FTL) shipping, you’ve likely been burned by:

No trucks available when you need them

Rates spiking overnight

Promised deliveries turning into apologies

The antidote? Leverage.

Enter the 3PL: a strategic force multiplier that gives you instant access to resources, market intelligence, and operational firepower that would take years (and millions) to build in-house.

Why FTL Freight Capacity Crunches Keep Happening

Capacity crunches happen when demand for FTL shipping exceeds the available supply of trucks and drivers. Think:

Holiday peaks

Natural disasters

Labor strikes

Tariff impacts

A sudden 30% spike in online orders

Geographic seasonality – produce season

Result: spot rates soar, carriers ghost smaller shippers, and delivery promises become liabilities.

Now for the good news. A great 3PL gives you a systematic advantage when everyone else is scrambling.

Let’s break down how.

1. Expand Carrier Access Through a 3PL Network

Problem: When capacity is tight, carriers pick the clients that bring them consistent, high-margin freight. Everyone else gets bumped.

3PL Solution: They’ve already built deep relationships with national and regional carriers—relationships you tap into immediately. This gives you:

Faster truck matching

Competitive rates in volatile markets

Reliable service even in remote or congested areas

2. Use Freight Intelligence for Market Agility

Markets change. But most shippers find out too late.

3PLs track:

Spot vs. contract rate trends and market conditions

Regional and seasonal availability

Driver turnover

Policy and weather disruptions

They turn data into action—rerouting loads, adjusting modal mix, and locking in rates before spikes hit.

3. Increase Freight Flexibility with Contingency Options

Capacity crunches punish inflexibility.

A strong 3PL helps you build in agility with:

Alternative routings

LTL for partial loads

Intermodal when roads jam up

Team drivers to beat delivery deadlines

4. Leverage Negotiating Power for Better Freight Terms

A 3PL aggregates volume across shippers. That purchasing power gives them:

Priority access on busy lanes

Better rates

Drop trailer programs

Fuel surcharge protection

Larger capacity network

5. Optimize Shipments with Transportation Management Systems

Good 3PLs invest in TMS platforms that automate, track, and optimize your FTL shipments.

You get:

Instant quoting

Real-time tracking

Document digitization

Integration with your ERP or WMS

Transparency and visibility of shipments

Customer tenants to share information like BOLs, PODs, and invoices.

6. Reduce Risk with Proactive Freight Management

When freight’s tight, the risk of late shipments, damaged goods, or lost business increases.

A quality 3PL helps with:

Carrier backups, vetting and insurance monitoring

Real-time alerts

High-value freight insurance

Cross-border support with customs brokers and entry

7. Gain Scalable FTL Capacity for Growth

Need to ship 10x more during peak season?

Want to open a new distribution market?

Running a massive promo?

With a 3PL, you scale up (or down) without building new infrastructure.

8. Save Time by Outsourcing Freight Administration

Booking trucks, chasing updates, filing claims—it’s a drain on your team’s brainpower.

3PLs take that off your plate.

They handle:

Carrier sourcing

Rate negotiations

Dispatch and paperwork

Claims and follow-up

9. Identify Cost Savings Hidden in Your Freight Network

Great 3PLs are also cost detectives.

They’ll help you uncover:

Consolidation opportunities

Backhaul lanes

Modal optimization

Rate benchmarks

10. Improve Freight Performance with Data and KPIs

You can’t improve what you don’t track.

A performance-driven 3PL gives you:

KPI dashboards

Weekly/monthly performance reports

Strategic reviews

11. Align Your Logistics Strategy with a Trusted 3PL Partner

The best 3PLs don’t just move freight. They help you:

Future-proof your supply chain

Design distribution strategies

Navigate industry shifts

Align logistics to broader business goals

Why Partner with Gebrüder Weiss for FTL Solutions?

If you're navigating an FTL capacity crunch, don't go it alone. Gebrüder Weiss has been solving complex logistics problems for over 500 years.

Here’s what you get with us:

An extensive North American carrier network

Transparent pricing and real-time tracking

Custom routing options and multimodal solutions

Integrated freight services across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico

Freight tech that puts you in control

Learn more about our Full Truckload (FTL) Services and how we can help you maintain stability, cost control, and delivery performance during capacity crunches.

And Why It’s One of the Smartest Operational Moves You Can Make

blog article

If your cargo doesn't fill an entire container, LCL could be the right strategy to save money and gain logistical flexibility.

Understanding LCL Shipping

What is Less than Container Load (LCL)?

LCL shipping is an ocean freight method that allows businesses to ship smaller volumes of cargo by sharing container space with other shippers. Instead of booking an entire container, you only pay for the cubic meters your cargo occupies. It offers access to global markets without the cost burden of unused container space. This model is especially advantageous for businesses that ship frequently but in smaller batches, such as e-commerce retailers or seasonal product suppliers.

How LCL Works: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

Booking and Documentation: The shipper collaborates with a 3PL provider to arrange the shipment and handle the necessary paperwork. This stage involves selecting the best carrier, verifying cargo dimensions, and ensuring all customs documentation is complete.

Pickup and Consolidation: Goods are collected and transported to a consolidation center, where they're combined with other shipments. Skilled freight handlers inspect and pack cargo to maximize container space and minimize damage risk.

Transportation: The consolidated container is shipped to the destination port. The 3PL monitors transit progress and proactively addresses delays or rerouting if needed.

Deconsolidation and Delivery: Upon arrival, shipments are separated and delivered to their respective recipients. This step may also include customs clearance, temporary warehousing, and last-mile coordination.

Why Choose LCL Shipping? Key Benefits

Save on Costs with Shared Container Space

Only paying for the space you need makes LCL a cost-effective option for small to mid-sized shipments. It eliminates the inefficiency of waiting to fill an entire container or paying for unused space.

Better Peak Season Availability

LCL offers flexibility during peak shipping seasons, allowing businesses to send smaller shipments without waiting to accumulate enough goods for a full container. This responsiveness helps maintain consistent product availability during high-demand periods.

Minimized Inventory and Storage Costs

Regular LCL shipments enable businesses to maintain leaner inventories, reducing storage costs and responding more swiftly to market demands. Just-in-time delivery models become more achievable, especially for companies with limited warehousing capacity or fluctuating demand.

LCL Shipping Challenges and What to Expect

Slower Transit Times and Shared Timelines

Due to the consolidation process and multiple handling points, LCL shipments may have longer transit times compared to FCL.

Additional time is needed for grouping and degrouping cargo, which can introduce variability to delivery schedules.

Higher Cost per Cubic Meter Compared to FCL

While LCL is cost-effective for smaller shipments, the per-unit cost can be higher than FCL. It's essential to analyze shipment sizes to determine the most economical option.

For shipments approaching half or full-container volumes, FCL may offer better overall value.

Increased Risk from More Handling and Transfers

The multiple handling stages in LCL increase the potential for damage or loss. Proper packaging and partnering with a reliable 3PL can mitigate these risks. Use high-quality dunnage and clear labeling to protect goods and minimize confusion at deconsolidation points.

Comparing LCL and FCL: Which Option is Best for You?

Cost, Volume, and Security Considerations

Choosing between LCL and FCL depends on shipment volume, budget, and security needs. LCL suits smaller, less time-sensitive shipments, while FCL is ideal for larger, more urgent consignments.

Security-sensitive items or fragile goods often benefit from the exclusivity of FCL.

When to Use LCL vs. When to Use FCL

LCL: Ideal for shipments less than 15 cubic meters, flexible schedules, and cost-saving on smaller loads. Perfect for trial shipments, market entry tests, or ongoing smaller orders.

FCL: Best for shipments nearing full container capacity, requiring faster transit and enhanced security. FCL also simplifies customs processing and minimizes potential damage since cargo isn’t handled during consolidation.

How a 3PL Provider Simplifies LCL Shipping

End-to-End Coordination and Documentation

An experienced 3PL, like Gebrüder Weiss, manages the entire shipping process, from booking to final delivery, ensuring compliance and efficiency. They provide real-time tracking, ensure customs accuracy, and reduce administrative burden on your team.

Warehousing, Consolidation & Last-Mile Delivery

With a global logistics network, Gebrüder Weiss offers seamless consolidation, storage, and distribution services, enhancing end-to-end supply chain efficiency. Our local experts help navigate international regulations and streamline documentation.

How Much Does LCL Shipping Cost?

Factors That Influence Pricing

Volume and Weight: Charges are primarily based on the shipment's volume, with weight considerations for exceptionally heavy items. Minimum charges apply, so even small shipments should be evaluated for pricing thresholds.

Route and Distance: Longer distances and complex routes can increase costs.

Seasonality: Peak seasons may lead to higher rates due to increased demand. Holiday seasons, global trade surges, and capacity imbalances can all influence pricing.

Tips for Keeping Your LCL Costs Down

Optimize Packaging: Efficient packaging reduces volume, lowering costs. Avoid unnecessary pallets or void space in cartons.

Plan Ahead: Advance bookings can secure better rates and ensure space availability. Last-minute bookings are often subject to surcharges.

Partner with a Reliable 3PL to get the best rate and route. Leverage their negotiated carrier rates and technology tools to model cost scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions About LCL Shipping

Why Is LCL Sometimes More Expensive per Cubic Meter?

LCL shipping involves more handling, consolidation, and logistics coordination, which can increase the cost per cubic meter compared to FCL. The additional touchpoints and administrative work drive up the unit price.

How Long Do LCL Shipments Take?

LCL transit times range from 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the route, shipping season, and time required for consolidation and deconsolidation.

Transit time can also vary due to port congestion, customs clearnace, and vessel schedules.

Conclusion: Maximize Value by Pairing LCL Shipping with a Trusted 3PL Partner

LCL shipping is a smart choice for businesses with smaller loads seeking flexibility and cost control. Yet, for many in the industry, operational disruptions are nothing new. From pandemics and port delays to geopolitical tensions and extreme weather, the last decade has redefined what it means to be resilient.

At Gebrüder Weiss, we’ve helped customers navigate each of these turning points. Our global logistics network, paired with local expertise and proactive planning, enables us to keep supply chains running smoothly—even as new challenges emerge. In today’s environment of unpredictable trade policy and retaliatory tariffs, our focus on agility and resiliency helps businesses reduce risk, maintain performance, and strengthen their competitive edge.

Start with the big picture - tariffs are one of many global forces impacting supply chains

Supply chain organizations were already seeking ways to increase resiliency prior to the U.S. Presidential election. According to Capgemini Research Institute’s 2023 report, Intelligent Supply Chain, 94 percent of organizations said securing market access to withstand more frequent or severe disruptions will impact them, but only 11 percent felt well-equipped to handle these challenges.

Even with tariffs taking the primary focus, supply chain leaders can build and maintain efficient logistical operations by considering all factors. This big-picture view ensures that one solution doesn't come at the expense of another.

Global Impacts on Supply Chains

Geopolitical Impacts: Protectionist trade policies and reduced international engagement (e.g., USAID cuts, Paris Agreement withdrawal)

AI & Automation: Growing use of AI for optimization, forecasting, and real-time decisions

Sustainability Focus: Continued emphasis on ESG compliance, ethical sourcing, and green practices

Technological Integration: Advanced data tracking, internet-of-things sensors, and innovative logistics solutions are being widely implemented

Talent Challenges: Ongoing labor shortages, especially in digital and tech roles

E-commerce Growth: Rising demand reshaping supply chain models and delivery expectations

Energy Transition: Focus on renewables and resilient energy infrastructure

Understand the characteristics of an agile and resilient supply chain

While agility focuses on quick adaptation, resilience ensures long-term stability and risk mitigation. A truly future-proof supply chain needs both.

Agility means businesses can shift suppliers or adjust inventory levels in response to sudden tariff changes. An agile supply chain allows companies to react quickly to changes in demand, sourcing, and logistics while maintaining efficiency and cost-effectiveness through:

The ability to swiftly adjust procurement and transportation strategies.

Access to real-time data and predictive analytics for proactive decision-making.

Flexible inventory and warehousing solutions to handle demand fluctuations.

Resilience involves building robust, diversified supplier and logistics networks to withstand ongoing disruptions. A resilient supply chain has a foundation strong enough to withstand unexpected events and unpredictable economic factors through:

Longstanding relationships with global networks

Proactive and dedicated customer service

Extensive experience and a proven track record of success regardless of external circumstances.

Many companies still operate under rigid, cost-focused supply chain models that are not built to handle rapid changes. Globally, companies realized during the pandemic that they were over-reliant on a single supplier or manufacturing location, and they are facing the same realization in this era of tariffs.

Resilience is crucial for sustaining operations during crises and ensuring business continuity amid global uncertainties.

Strategies to Strengthen Supply Chain Agility and Resilience

Diversifying Supplier Networks to Reduce Risk

A key strategy to minimizing tariff impact is supplier diversification. Many companies are adopting a China Plus One strategy—moving production beyond China into countries like Mexico, Vietnam, and India. This approach reduces dependency on a single region and mitigates supply chain vulnerabilities.

Leveraging Technology and Real-Time Data for Better Decision-Making

Advanced supply chain visibility platforms like TURVO, provide real-time tracking and predictive insights, helping businesses optimize freight movements, reduce delays, and proactively manage risks.

Nearshoring and Reshoring: Reducing Dependency on Global Suppliers

More companies are shifting to nearshoring and reshoring to avoid tariff risks while improving supply chain efficiency.

Nearshoring (moving production closer to North America) shortens transit times and reduces geopolitical risks.

Reshoring brings production back to domestic markets, enhancing supply security while reducing overseas logistics costs.

Enhancing Inventory Management with Demand Forecasting

Balancing just-in-time inventory with strategic safety stock is crucial in a high-tariff environment. Companies using AI-powered demand forecasting tools can optimize stock levels, preventing overages and shortages.

How Gebrüder Weiss maintains both agility and resiliency

Our supply chain framework is built on three principles: anticipate, respond, and recover. This framework has enabled us to keep our clients' supply chains operating smoothly despite industry disruptions:

Anticipate

Proactive risk assessment and scenario planning

Continuous monitoring of potential disruptions

Investment in predictive analytics and early warning systems

Respond

Flexible operational processes and infrastructure

Diversified supplier base and sourcing strategies

Agile decision-making protocols and cross-functional teams

Recover

Robust crisis management and response plans

Quick mobilization of resources and alternative solutions

Strategic assessment on ways to further future-proof the supply chain

Customized Solutions: A Case Study in Agility and Resilience

One of our clients, a global vehicle component manufacturer, was working with us in Europe. They reached out to expand our relationship because they faced challenges in cross-border logistics at the U.S./Mexico border.

The client faced a series of challenges with their former 3PL partner, including a lack of established lead times for southbound raw material shipments and an inability to provide reliable timelines to major manufacturing customers. They also felt the supplier lacked experience in cross-border operations and prioritized shipment on their timetable, not the client's timetable, causing reputational and monetary losses.

Anticipate: Gebrüder Weiss predicted the shift to nearshoring and already had an active location in El Paso, Texas, with infrastructure and a skilled team.

Respond: We created a custom solution for the client and developed a 16,200-square-foot Laredo warehouse to suit their needs. It's Hazmat-certified, has a cross-dock facility for northbound and southbound cargo, has bonded and general cargo handling, includes customs brokerage services, and handles 4,000+ cross-docked loads annually.

Recover: The client was assigned a single point of contact to ensure personalized service and proactive issue resolution. Although this was a custom solution, we assessed their needs to see how they may apply to other clients.

As a result of this agility and resiliency, we reduced our client's cross-dock wait times from several days to a few hours, improved shipment reliability with zero overages or shortages attributed to Gebrüder Weiss, and implemented meticulous recordkeeping on our client's behalf. These efforts yielded significant cost reductions due to improved shipment reliability, shorter lead times, and overall enhanced supply chain performance.

The Path Forward

The supply chain has been tested time and time again. Supply chain leaders can chart a smooth path forward – even amid tariffs – by balancing proactive planning with enough room to adjust quickly, reducing over-reliance on single suppliers or regions, and laying out strategies to anticipate, respond, recover – and move forward.

Are you ready to create a more resilient and agile supply chain?

blog article

On April 1, the fourth season of GWcycles, the international cycling campaign led by global logistics leader Gebrüder Weiss launches into action. Cycling for the Seas is the rallying call for cycling enthusiasts worldwide to hit the saddle together – and pedal with purpose until October 31. Front and center in the campaign is the joy of putting miles on your legs and air in your lungs. The company’s goal is to connect people across nations and raise awareness of sustainable mobility. Last year, participants around the world covered over 810,000 kilometers (503310 miles) – the equivalent of cycling to the moon and back.

New in 2025: cycle longer, celebrate success faster

This year’s campaign is running a month longer than usual, wrapping up on October 31. Additionally, the individual competition now features shorter distances — meaning participants can reach prize milestones even faster. Kilometer/Mile totals are tracked using the new version of the Radbonus app, available for free from app stores. A key highlight of the new season is that for every 100,000 kilometers (62137 miles) cycled collectively, our new partner, CleanHub, will remove a ton of plastic waste from rivers and coastal regions of Southeast Asia. The organization is actively committed to reducing plastic pollution in particularly vulnerable regions.

GWcycles welcomes riders at all levels – from recreational cruisers to long-distance professionals. In addition to the rewarding feeling of contributing to a meaningful cause, participants will also have the opportunity to win exciting prizes. The 300 most active riders by the end of the campaign will be entered into a drawing for a high-quality gravel bike, while the top-ranked cyclist will score an exclusive Gebrüder Weiss winner’s jersey. Register now and start pedaling! www.gw-world.com/gwcycles

News

By investing in our network, automation and digital innovation, we succeeded in expanding our range of services and developing the transport solutions our customers need – with the explicit aim of guaranteeing supply chain stability,” says Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss.

In the Air & Sea sector, the group reported the highest increase in revenue with 939 million euros/1.01 billion dollars, a gain of 21 percent (2023: 776 million euros/837 million dollars). This growth was powered by various factors, including the expansion of the networks in the United States and Germany, alongside high transport volumes in transpacific trade. Rising sea freight rates for exports from China to Europe provided an additional boost. Attacks in the Red Sea forced container ships to take the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) instead of through the Suez Canal.

Revenues in the Land Transport and Logistics segment rose by five percent to 1.52 billion euros/1.63 million dollars (2023: 1.45 billion euros/1.56 billion dollars). This figure includes sales generated by the Home Delivery service. Cargoes such as refrigerators and furniture are transported to end customers in Austria and several eastern European countries, implementing a two-man handling service.
DPD Austria, which is partly owned by the Gebrüder Weiss parcel service, processed more than 63.2 million parcels last year. This translates into an increase of one million parcels compared to 2023. The main growth drivers were exports and private consumers.

The company's equity ratio remained steady at 60 percent, positioning Gebrüder Weiss as a crisis-resistant service provider and a dependable employer. The workforce across the group’s 180 locations worldwide rose slightly to 8,700 (2023: 8,600).

Despite the economically challenging environment, the logistics provider adhered to its investment strategy. During the 2024 fiscal year, a total of 124 million euros/129 million dollars were devoted to expansion and modernization measures, environmentally friendly power generation, and e-mobility.

Investments in logistics locations, automation, and digitalization

Gebrüder Weiss commenced construction of a modern logistics and IT center featuring a fully automated high-bay warehouse in the immediate vicinity of its corporate headquarters and the Wolfurt freight terminal (Vorarlberg/Austria). A new logistics facility was opened in the southern German town of Straubing, providing Bavaria’s industrial and commercial players with efficient transport links to national and global markets. Gebrüder Weiss also expanded its locations in Maria Saal (Austria), Aldingen (Germany), Bratislava (Slovakia) and Tbilisi (Georgia). In Budapest (Hungary), an Autostore warehouse was built as part of the site expansion program; here, inbound cargo handling, material flows, and order picking are largely automated.

In North America, revenues grew by 47%, driven in part by strategic expansion across the U.S. Southwest and Intermountain West. The U.S. business acquired air-and-sea freight forwarder Cargo-Link in Salt Lake City, Utah, and opened new branch office locations in Denver, Colorado, and Phoenix, Arizona. These new additions enhanced regional LTL, FTL, and LCL service capabilities and brought the number of company-owned locations in North America to 17. To combat the rise of freight fraud and double brokering, the U.S. team developed a partnership with Highway, a leading carrier identity company. The logistics leader also partnered with Turvo, utilizing its Collaborative Transportation Management System software for greater transparency and efficiency.

Gebrüder Weiss has also charted further progress with its digital service palette: The number of customer-based users registering for the myGW portal has risen to 25,000 since its launch in 2020. The platform provides real-time information on all goods flows and gives customers full transparency on the progress of their orders. In 2024, the application’s functions were progressively fine-tuned to better meet customers’ needs.

Expanding renewable energy and e-mobility

The company took important steps towards decarbonization and climate-friendly power generation. Additional photovoltaic (PV) systems were installed in Hungary and Slovakia. Gebrüder Weiss now operates 34 PV systems, which generated some 13,000 megawatt hours of electricity during the last fiscal year. This equals roughly half of the power requirements of all Gebrüder Weiss locations worldwide. The increased use of solar energy has led to overall savings of 2,738 metric tons of CO2.

To further reduce CO2 emissions on a sustainable basis, Gebrüder Weiss is also reorganizing its own fleet and progressively deploying vehicles with electric drives. In Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and Romania, the logistics company is already utilizing e-transporters to deliver goods ordered online to private households. In Germany, two electric trucks were introduced in 2024, and a further 13 will follow in Austria this year. As an initial step, the logistics provider has already converted a large part of its truck fleet in Austria to hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), which can potentially reduce CO2 emissions by some 90 percent (compared to diesel fuel).

Wolfram Senger-Weiss explains: “Along with the issues of sustainability, infrastructure, and digitalization, the logistics industry faces numerous other hurdles this year. The persistently weak economy in Europe, new tariffs, and the crisis in the automotive industry are intensifying the competition for many companies. Gebrüder Weiss will continue to meet these challenges with a solution- and technology-oriented approach while aligning its general business strategy to the needs of its customers.”

News

The Phoenix office will primarily handle general cargo while also playing a key role in managing global shipments within Gebrüder Weiss' international logistics network.

The company appointed Mark Berumen as Phoenix Branch Manager to lead the new location. Berumen brings a wealth of knowledge to the role as a seasoned logistics leader with over 30 years of experience in freight forwarding, supply chain management and international trade. His expertise spans profit and loss, budgeting, carrier negotiation, import/export, operations management, air and ocean freight, sales, and project management.

"Throughout my career in logistics and freight forwarding, Gebrüder Weiss has always had a reputation for being the gold standard in global transport," says Berumen. "Our Phoenix office has fast become an integral part of U.S. operations, and it's an honor to be part of the Gebrüder Weiss team."

Gebrüder Weiss has been strategically expanding its operations nationwide to accommodate trade demand between the U.S. and Mexico. Since Arizona is Mexico's largest trading partner, the Phoenix location is growing in importance as a key hub for trade across the Southern border. In 2023, there was close to $20 billion in import/export activity between the two locations.

"The Phoenix branch office further strengthens our cross-border trade capabilities and provides even more supply chain flexibility," says Mark McCullough, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss North America. "Our ongoing expansion in the U.S. continues to open new doors of opportunity for our clients."

In addition to the Phoenix office, Gebrüder Weiss has broadened its North American footprint with new warehouses, port facilities, and branch locations. Within the past few years, the company opened a new warehouse in Laredo, Texas, to accommodate road, air, and sea logistics services; a freight hub in Miami, Florida, to facilitate transport between Latin America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean; a 106,000-square-foot warehouse in Elgin, Illinois; an El Paso, Texas, office to meet increased demand for cross-border trade; and a new office in Denver, Colorado to support domestic trucking, air cargo, e-commerce, and intermodal transport services. The company also acquired Salt Lake City-based freight forwarding company Cargo-Link, expanding its presence in the Intermountain West.

News

In a recent interview with Pam Granoff Simon, Conference Chair at Manifest, Mark McCullough, CEO Gebrüder Weiss North America, shared his perspective on navigating these shifts and highlighted actionable strategies for staying ahead.

The full video interview is available above and below are some key takeaways.

Standing Out in a Competitive Landscape
In today’s crowded logistics industry, companies are seeking providers who bring both experience and innovation to the table. Mark emphasized the importance of service excellence and long-term reliability in meeting client needs, particularly during times of change. Focusing on practical, tailored solutions often makes the difference when navigating uncertainties. With over 500 years of history, Gebrüder Weiss has built a reputation as one of the most established and trusted logistics companies worldwide, blending its extensive expertise with modern solutions to adapt to the evolving demands of global trade.

Preparing for Policy and Tariff Changes
With the Trump administration expected to introduce higher import tariffs, many businesses are reevaluating their supply chains to manage potential cost increases. The anticipated tariffs—ranging from 10% to 20% on a broad range of goods—could increase consumer prices and logistical disruptions. Staying informed about these developments and proactively adjusting strategies is essential for mitigating financial impacts.

The Case for Nearshoring
Nearshoring has gained momentum as companies look to bring production closer to key markets. Mexico and Canada have emerged as strong candidates for reducing transportation costs, avoiding tariffs, and shortening lead times. Both countries offer established infrastructure and skilled labor, making them viable options for businesses seeking to diversify their supply chains and enhance resilience. With robust cross-border logistics solutions and deep expertise in these markets, Gebrüder Weiss is well-positioned to help businesses leverage the advantages of nearshoring.

Managing Potential Disruptions
Port congestion, rising freight costs, and sourcing challenges are among the top concerns for many businesses. Planning ahead by diversifying entry points, building inventory buffers, and exploring alternative transportation routes can help minimize disruptions. Technology that provides real-time tracking and visibility is also an invaluable tool for managing supply chain complexities.

Proactive Strategies for the Future
Mark highlighted the importance of maintaining flexibility and staying updated on regulatory changes. Companies that actively evaluate their supplier networks and inventory strategies are better positioned to respond to shifting conditions. Collaboration with logistics partners who offer insight and support is critical for navigating these challenges effectively.

Your Next Steps
As businesses prepare for these changes, collaboration and proactive planning are essential. If you’re exploring ways to adapt your supply chain to new trade policies or considering nearshoring opportunities, our team is here to help.

Contact us today to discuss solutions tailored to your needs.

blog article

FTL vs. LTL: How to Optimize Freight Choices

Two key options dominate freight transport: Full Truckload (FTL) and Less Than Truckload (LTL).</pp:subtitle>

This guide explores when to use each and how combining these strategies can revolutionize your supply chain.

Choosing the Right Freight Type for Your Needs

When to Choose FTL:

Large shipments: FTL is more cost-effective when your freight fills an entire truck, typically 26 pallets or more.

Time-sensitive deliveries: FTL ensures faster transit times by using direct routes with minimal stops.

Fragile or high-value goods: Reduced handling lowers the risk of damage to delicate or expensive items.

Consistent, high-volume shipping: Regular FTL usage can secure better rates and ensure dedicated truck capacity.

When to Opt for LTL:

Smaller shipments: LTL is ideal for loads under ten pallets or 15,000 pounds.

Budget-conscious shipping: Share truck space and costs with other businesses to save money.

Flexible delivery schedules: Frequent smaller shipments ensure you don’t have to wait to fill a truck.

Diverse destination points: LTL enables cost-effective deliveries to multiple locations in one shipment.

Practical Scenarios: FTL and LTL in Action

FTL Advantage: Rapid Restocking

Picture an electronics retailer experiencing a sudden surge in demand for a hot new smartphone. Using FTL shipping, they can replenish inventory quickly by shipping directly to multiple stores. This ensures products hit the shelves without delay, keeping customers happy and reducing lost sales opportunities.

LTL Benefit: Efficient Multi-Drop Distribution

For a small artisanal food producer delivering specialty items to stores across a state, LTL shipping offers the perfect solution. They can send smaller quantities to several locations in a single shipment, ensuring product freshness and maintaining manageable inventory levels for each retailer.

Synergy in Strategy: Combining FTL and LTL

While FTL and LTL serve different purposes, blending these methods can yield powerful results. Here are some practical ways to combine them:

Hub-and-Spoke Model: Ship large quantities to regional distribution centers using FTL, then use LTL for last-mile deliveries to individual customers or stores.

Seasonal Flexibility: During peak seasons, FTL can handle high-volume shipments, while LTL keeps stock levels steady during slower periods, reducing inventory costs.

Product Mix Optimization: Use FTL for high-volume, fast-moving goods and rely on LTL for slower-moving or niche products to ensure efficient inventory management across your portfolio.

Risk Mitigation: A diversified shipping strategy helps protect against disruptions, such as capacity shortages in the FTL or LTL market, ensuring supply chain resilience.

Key Takeaways

Combining FTL and LTL strategies can unlock a more agile, cost-effective, and resilient supply chain. By analyzing shipping data, understanding product flow, and staying flexible, businesses can optimize shipping costs, improve delivery performance, and keep pace with the ever-changing demands of modern logistics.

Contact Gebrüder Weiss for expert 3PL LTL and FTL freight solutions:

Kevin Sendre, Director of FTL North America

Kate Leatherbury, Director of LTL North America

blog article

The "Solar Power for Palorinya" initiative, spearheaded by the Catholic missionary order of the Comboni Missionaries and implemented by Brother Erich Fischnaller, aims to provide sustainable energy for training workshops that equip refugees with trade skills such as carpentry, metalwork, and baking. In alignment with the organization's sustainability goals, Gebrüder Weiss engages in sustainable development partnerships and supports initiatives that promote sustainable living.

Providing young people with education and knowledge so that they can build an independent existence is a critical part of this philanthropic project. Diesel generators previously powered the settlement and its training workshops. Now, the workshops will benefit from a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly solar energy solution. The PV system, donated by photovoltaic manufacturers and electrical engineering companies from Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein, operates off-grid and can generate up to 200 kilowatts of electrical energy.

“This is an exemplary initiative by companies in the region that helps to give the local population a perspective for the future – and it also makes ecological sense. Solar energy instead of fossil fuels: a sustainable aid project that we are happy to support,” said Andreas Bilgeri, Manager of Gebrüder Weiss Air & Sea Wolfurt.

The solar energy system, packed into a 40-foot sea freight container, will begin its journey before Christmas. It will travel by rail from Wolfurt to Rotterdam, then by ship to Mombasa, Kenya, and finally by truck to its destination in Uganda. The global logistics company is transporting the solar energy system free of charge from Vorarlberg to Uganda in East Africa.

"I am very happy to have Gebrüder Weiss, an internationally experienced logistics company located in Vorarlberg, on our side. This simplifies the coordination processes for us and we can be sure that the solar system will arrive at its destination safely and on time," says Matthias Burtscher, one of the coordinators of the campaign.

With the support of many volunteers, the donated PV system modules were assembled, tested and then packed at his company's premises before being transported. This collaborative effort exemplifies the power of regional partnerships to create sustainable solutions and provide vital resources for underserved communities around the world.

About the project

"Solar Power for Palorinya" is a joint project of the Catholic missionary order of the Comboni Missionaries - represented locally by Brother Erich Fischnaller - and numerous companies, associations and individuals from Vorarlberg, Liechtenstein and South Tyrol. Fischnaller, who was born in South Tyrol and began his missionary work in Africa 50 years ago, has been involved in the Palorinya refugee center since 2016. More than 125,000 people live there, most of whom have fled the civil war in neighboring Sudan.

The new solar energy system not only helps save on the high cost of diesel fuel, but also makes the most of Uganda's climatic conditions. Due to its location on the equator, the sun shines at a consistently high intensity almost all year round.

News

With over 500 years of experience in global logistics, we've built a reputation for adapting to the unexpected. Our proactive planning approach ensures uninterrupted operations, combining logistics risk management with business continuity strategies to help customers mitigate risks and maintain supply chain resilience amid economic challenges, labor shortages, weather disruptions, and geopolitical shifts. Whether managing cross-border freight or adjusting to nearshoring trends, Gebrüder Weiss offers the expertise and flexibility to keep your business moving forward—no matter what disruptions arise.

A 360O Approach
We take a 360O approach to business continuity planning. We consider risks and gaps and then outline workarounds, actions, resources, and supply chain disruption solutions to mitigate the risks and fill in the gaps.

Some business continuity plans take an if/then approach: if Scenario A happens, then we're prepared with Plan B. This binary method is limiting and can expose a business to additional risks. At Gebrüder Weiss, we often say there are "1,000 possibilities" regarding a logistics need. Our 360O approach gives us a more expansive solution to address the 1,000 possibilities.

Keys to Success
A 360o business continuity plan must be built on established operating procedures, including internal and external operations, and accepted by all stakeholders across the supply chain. Our keys to success include:

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - We have senior-level staff responsible for designing and implementing SOPs, developing systems for continuous improvement, and overseeing all compliance, U.S. operations, and internal process functions.

Internal operations – We focus on maintaining a highly efficient back office, which allows our operators and client-facing managers to focus on client needs rather than office operations. In turn, our teams can spend time finding more cost-effective carrier options or customizing client solutions. We also prioritize internal communications and ongoing training so our employees can quickly respond to any situation.

Engagement – We involve our customers and stakeholders in the plan's design. Their input is valuable to the process, and involvement increases engagement and plan adoption. We also have established channels to ensure ongoing communication and consistent education across locations and staff levels.

Mitigating Risk Across Categories
These supply chain disruption solutions ensure smooth operations, even under unexpected challenges:

Technology – In today's connected world, managing freight and logistics risks requires constant vigilance to guard against technological threats, from hacking to outages. Choosing a 3PL with advanced technology ensures efficient risk management and uninterrupted operations. To enhance security and strengthen logistics risk management, Gebrüder Weiss brings partners with advanced fraud prevention technologies, such as Highway™. Cutting-edge logistics technology ensures that our customers benefit from real-time freight visibility, providing complete transparency. This visibility enables supply chain managers to make quick, informed decisions and maintain continuity during disruptions.

Labor – Labor risks range from outright shortages to a strike in a critical supply route to a key employee's sudden absence. We develop business continuity plans with clear roles and responsibilities for employee coverage and adequate training and communications for these employees.

Location(s) – Preventing disruptions is our first line of defense against location-based risks. During the pandemic, the importance of location risk management became even more evident, prompting us to anticipate the shift toward nearshoring. We significantly expanded our warehouse spaces, senior executive staff, and port operations in preparation. As nearshoring becomes a central strategy for many businesses, customers increasingly seek logistics providers who efficiently manage cross-border operations. Our expanded facilities near the U.S.-Mexico border offer customers the freight forwarding flexibility to adapt quickly to changing conditions and ensure uninterrupted supply chain operations.

Suppliers/partners – Part of location risk extends to suppliers and partners. Understanding their remote operations capabilities and business continuity plans is critical to execution. Our eSourcing platform serves as the central transaction medium for business relations between suppliers and Gebrüder Weiss worldwide. We have an efficient procurement process from end to end.

Planning for Generations to Come
At Gebrüder Weiss, we think in terms of generations, not quarters. We've been reliably moving the world's freight for centuries, and with our business continuity approach, we have a foundation to sustain us for generations to come.

Are you ready to ensure your supply chain is resilient? Contact us.

blog article

Learn how changes could impact logistics, supply chains, and costs while discovering strategies to minimize disruptions and ensure operational stability.</pp:subtitle>

As the new U.S. administration prepares to take office, we want to provide insights into the anticipated shifts in trade policies, tariffs, and additional factors that could impact logistics and supply chains in the coming months. At Gebrüder Weiss, we are committed to helping you navigate these changes with a strategic approach, ensuring your operations continue smoothly amid an evolving regulatory landscape.

Expected Tariff Changes and Cost Implications
The Trump administration has indicated its intention to implement broad tariffs on imports, particularly from countries like China. We may see general tariffs ranging from 10% to 20%, with the possibility of significantly higher rates for specific product categories and sources. For instance, imports from China could see tariffs of up to 60-100%, depending on the industry. These measures are part of a strategy to encourage domestic manufacturing and may lead to increased costs for imported goods across various sectors.

Higher tariffs could lead to an estimated 5-10% rise in consumer prices for imported goods, as increased import costs may ultimately be passed down through supply chains. We are actively assessing potential cost impacts to offer clear guidance and tailored strategies for our customers.

Potential Disruptions and Supply Chain Shifts
Given the expected policy shifts, there are several key areas where your supply chain might be affected:

Increased Freight and Inventory Costs: Anticipated tariffs could result in higher transportation and warehousing costs, especially for imported goods. A short-term surge in imports, driven by companies seeking to avoid future tariffs, could also raise freight costs and create tighter capacity.

Sourcing Challenges and Trade Tensions: Some companies may need to re-evaluate sourcing from tariffed regions, which could shift global supply patterns. Additionally, new tariffs and trade policies may lead to responses from trade partners, potentially causing further adjustments in trade agreements, particularly in North America and with EU markets.

Port Congestion Risks and Possible Strike Impact: The potential for increased port activity, as companies look to import goods before anticipated tariff hikes, could lead to congestion and delays at key U.S. ports. Compounding this, there is a potential port strike looming on January 15, 2025, on the East and Gulf Coasts, which could severely impact the flow of goods and further delay shipments. If this strike goes into effect, it may add to the already strained capacity, causing disruptions in lead times and inventory flow. As your logistics partner, we are closely monitoring this situation and will keep you updated as it develops.

Recommended Mitigation Strategies
In light of these expected developments, we recommend taking proactive measures to minimize potential disruptions:

Evaluate Supplier Diversification: Consider sourcing options in regions less affected by tariffs or closer to your consumer base. This can reduce both costs and lead times.

Optimize Inventory Planning: Adjust inventory levels to account for possible delays and increased costs, especially for goods impacted by new tariffs or potential port disruptions.

Stay Informed on Policy Changes: Monitoring updates on trade policies and tariffs will be crucial in making informed decisions and adapting your strategies accordingly. Industry associations may also offer valuable updates and guidance during this time.

Our Commitment to Supporting Your Business
As your trusted 3PL partner, Gebrüder Weiss is here to support you with the flexibility and expertise required in these times of change. We will:

Continuously monitor trade policies and provide timely updates on any changes that may affect your operations.

Offer solutions tailored to help you adapt to evolving tariffs and logistics challenges.

Leverage our network and industry experience to reduce potential disruptions and support your strategic planning.

We understand the importance of stability and predictability for your operations and are dedicated to guiding you through this transition. Should you have any questions or wish to discuss customized strategies, please don’t hesitate to contact your Gebrüder Weiss representative.

Thank you for your continued partnership with Gebrüder Weiss. We are here to help you move forward confidently; whatever changes may come.

blog article

<pp:caseid>718262</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>Learn how to select a logistics provider based on cost-effectiveness, experience, technology, and proven reliability to optimize your supply chain and ensure on-time delivery with Gebrüder Weiss.</pp:subtitle>

Any company with goods to ship wants to see their deliveries arrive reliably, free of damage, and on time, making carrier selection crucial. To choose the best third-party logistics (3PL) partner, you can look for cost-effective methods and a track record of reliability and efficiency as a start, but these factors still aren't enough to ensure safe transit and on-time arrival.

Flexibility, experience, an established network, customer service, and knowledge of full truckload (FTL) shipping and less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping are also vital. As an international leader in freight forwarding, Gebrüder Weiss has extensive knowledge of shipping complexities. Here are more details on choosing the right carrier for your needs.

1. Don't Select a 3PL LTL or FTL Shipper on Price Alone

The freight market is unpredictable and having the right logistics partner is crucial for FTL and LTL shipping success. While looking for the lowest-price option may seem tempting, you may be sacrificing quality, scalability, and/or the safety of your products for the lowest-cost provider, putting your shipment at risk.

A better approach is looking at overall cost-effectiveness and value for the price, not just the price itself. For example, a carrier's reliability and on-time delivery track record should be top priorities. Consider factors like customer service, industry reputation, and the 3PL's ability to handle your specific type of cargo.

For FTL, ensure the carrier has the right type and size of trucks to accommodate your shipments efficiently. If you need LTL shipping, focus on finding carriers with well-developed network routes that align with your shipping needs.

Gebrüder Weiss has a 550-year history of providing service excellence. Customers work with one key point of contact who has access to over 25,000 carriers. Each Gebrüder Weiss representative helps customers minimize risks and obtain competitive pricing by leveraging our buying power.

2. Choose a 3PL LTL and FTL Partner with Proven Experience in Accurate Load Planning

For both LTL and FTL shipments, accurate load planning is essential. Load inaccuracies are costly and can lead to delays or missed shipments. Proper load planning can also help prevent damage during transit. We ensure your shipments are appropriately sized for the chosen truck to minimize wasted space and reduce shipping costs.

Optimizing available space is crucial in FTL shipping, since a single truck is dedicated to your cargo. Effective load planning is equally vital in LTL shipping, as multiple shipments share a single truck. Gebrüder Weiss will coordinate shipments with similar destinations and delivery windows to maximize efficiency. This reduces handling and transit time, saving costs and ensuring timely delivery.

3. Seek Advanced Technology for Visibility and Tracking

Modern technology has transformed the shipping industry, allowing real-time visibility and tracking capabilities for FTL and LTL shipments. A 3PL that keeps you in the dark and does not have accurate, timely updates on progress is a frustrating experience. The lack of information can also put your cargo at greater risk since the company won't be able to respond as quickly to an issue.

We keep our customers informed and have advanced technology to monitor delivery progress. Our Gebrüder Weiss Transportation Management System (TMS) can help you manage and track your shipments effectively. This technology allows you to monitor your cargo's progress, make necessary real-time adjustments, and know that your shipments will reach their destinations on schedule.

Choosing the best carrier for your FTL and LTL cargo needs can optimize your shipping processes, reduce costs, and enhance your supply chain's overall efficiency and reliability.

Contact Gebrüder Weiss for expert 3PL LTL and FTL freight solutions:

Kevin Sendre, Director of FTL North America

Kate Leatherbury, Director of LTL North America

blog article

Since the company incorporated the Asian-Pacific region into its global network in 1999, Gebrüder Weiss has grown to offer its air and sea freight services in Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya which is strategically positioned between two of the country’s most populous cities.

“The decision to gain a foothold in Japan has turned out to be the right strategy in the long term. Companies in the island nation manufacture their products for recipients all over the world. So, their goods are present in numerous supply chains within the Gebrüder Weiss network,” explains Michael Zankel, Regional Manager East Asia / Oceania at Gebrüder Weiss.

Owing to its strong industrial base, Japan had developed into one of the world’s most successful economies by the end of the 1980s, and today ranks fourth in terms of GDP. “It therefore made sense to incorporate Japan and the Asian-Pacific region into the global network of Gebrüder Weiss to offer these companies solutions for their logistics requirements,” recalls Stefan Aebi, Country Manager Japan at Gebrüder Weiss. There are five major transshipment centers strategically located for sea freight transports with container ports in Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kobe, and Osaka. The airports in Tokyo and Osaka offer connections to the air freight network.

Congratulations on the 25th anniversary also came from long-time customers that Gebrüder Weiss has provided with transport services since the company’s early years in Japan. “Gebrüder Weiss has always supported us reliably with excellent logistics services in times of the pandemic and other global challenges. We have gained a lot of added value from the company’s professionalism and innovative power, and we greatly appreciate this trusting partnership,” says Hisaya Shiga, Assistant to the Head of Sales – Functional Clothing at Kurabo, a Japanese textile and chemical manufacturer. Other customers come from the automotive and mechanical engineering sectors.
