Happy Halloween:Song Review

Ahh, autumn. What I argue to be the best season. Jumping in leaf piles, pumpkin and apple scents, and the air being just chilly enough all make fall a truly great season. But do you know what the best part of fall is?:Halloween. Who doesn’t love dressing up in costumes, watching spooky movies, and getting free candy? And if you don’t,uhh…you guys are missing out.Of course I had to start my reviews with my absolute favorite holiday, but what song should I review? Well, I’ll have you know that there is a fairly new Halloween song considering that all of the ones people remember are mostly before the 2000’s. It’s called Happy Halloween, written by Junky and sung by Juliet Simmons who goes by Jubyphonic.

Happy Halloween was released on October 10,2014 with over 2.7 million views on Youtube. The lyrics tell the story of a ghost that trick or treats on Halloween and will haunt your house if she doesn’t get candy. This stretches to any circumstances and she’ll not have mercy no matter what reason there is. While she will haunt and terrorize the house until she moves onto the next house, she says that she doesn’t actually harm you in any way. At the beginning of the song it also seems like she is calling upon her ghost friends, who take the form of small mice in the video to get her a s much candy as possible. She had quite a lot of pixie stiks.

The beat is really good at giving you the feeling of Halloween night, while still being upbeat and easy to dance to at a party. There is a subtle but noticeable violin track in the background, adding to the aesthetic of ghosts.  However, most of the song has fun, pop-punk instrumentals that really makes you feel the Halloween spirit. It really stays true to the spoopy but whimsical Halloween songs that inspired it, and yet still giving it a modern feel. Junky has always been fantastically outstanding at making pop beats and his talents really show in this piece of work. Happy Halloween is probably his best work and the one that has the most rock elements implemented. With that, now onto some theories and inferences about the songs vague details.

The third line of the first verse states, “So, you see, they kinda put a spell on me.” This line refers to a mysterious they who apparently cursed her to only consume candy on Halloween, explaining why she is so crazy for it. This could have been done by human exorcists who wanted to be rid of her but it also could have been done by some more powerful ghosts. The other theory is that she might have been the accidental inventor of trick or treating. While this song is not based on reality, in the story people gave out candy on Halloween to appease her, and eventually little girls pretended to be her to get sweets. Eventually boys started doing it too and it became a tradition for children to dress up as monsters for candy on that day. There aren’t many things in the story you have to think about, but there are some ideas that are interesting to speculate on.

This is a really jumpy song that is sure to put you in the Halloween mood. It has the perfect mix of cute and spooky in just about every aspect of it, perfect for anybody who likes Halloween. It has a simple story that improves the song and doesn’t give the creator a lot of work, which is useful since writing is not one of Junky’s main strengths. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not amazing and there are better Halloween songs out there, but if you are looking for something short and sweet, it’s an overall decent and fun song.
